Does anyone understand a word kids say today? Got to admit i'm hard pressed sometimes, my daughter could almost be talking another language. In a recent survey for the association of teachers and lecturers published today; it would seem that teachers are none the wiser either. Well fear not! Yet another 'Teacher spares' saves the day, and translates what seems like gobbledegook into the Queens English; just store it in your desk. Next time young Wayne tells you you're 'butterz', not only will you know exactly what the little sod means; but you'll also have the immense satisfaction of watching his crestfallen face as you give him a weeks detention.
I really should get an OBE for this...

that is so funny to see it written down! Surely your daughter didn't teach you all them?!
She sure did, and i'll be washing her mouth out with soap later...!
As there have been numerous stories in the papers about this sort of slang becoming a new language in britain, this is really good. hear it being spoken on the bus and think 'what an earth are they saying?!" so a translation is defo in order! Have you seen the 'A dictionary of Bristle' ? its almost exactly the same as what you have done here with a-z of vicky type phrases and words.
ps got to litter pick at the festival if i want to get in! No perks in this industry I tell you!!

Yeh tell me about it, i was on the bus today and i heard two lads 'talking', i had to ask Leanne for a translation! I know this 'teacher spares' thing is different to how my project started out, but it's way more fun and relevent to me, especially as a mum and future teacher. Picking up litter?! That's abit grim, but at least you'll have the 3 festi days to yourself. I've heard tales from people who've done it and the stuff they found was amazing!

Another interesting thing with this slang is that it has its own set of linguistic rules (my daughter has given me the lowdown!); for instance you wouldn't say 'she's got a backoff' (backoff = big bum), you'd just point and say 'backoff'. most of the slang involves saying only one word, instead of a whole sentence, which is alarming, as teenagers' conversational skills are monosyllabic at the best of times, the use of slang just makes it ten times worse!
