Thoughts

Got quite a few responses from people over he last couple of days, and i was quite surprised at the response. The majority feel that traditional teaching methods are extremely useful (of course there are the odd one or two that hated it), and are necessary for personal growth. In all it seems that those studying graphic design tend to benefit and can then transfer the skills learnt at a later stage. As one guy wrote, if you have these skills, at least you have the choice of using them, if not, then you're limited; and i tend to agree with that.
I would like to illustrate the differences between the two schools of thought, but i don't believe they can simply be explained away as 'for' and 'against', that maybe abit too literal. The two tend to spill over into each other, but at some times are separate entities, and i feel that my dual book idea can work for this using text and imagery. I'm hoping to print and make the books myself, apart from spiral binding of course! It's a shame that there is so little time left; if i hadn't have faffed around at the start i could've really have gone into this with some more depth, as it stands with so little time remaining i may only be skimming the surface; which is a shame as i feel i've let myself down abit. But no point moaning, gotta get on with it and start some work.

Good that you get responses, urge you however to draw a line under research pretty soon. Hopefully not too many 'fine art' respondants, they do tend to differentiate from the design sector.
Thought best for me not too reply: a. since I am marking this work and b. I have a distinct bias regarding these issues.
Just about to schedule the next round of group reviews for early next week..would be great if you could resolve and be on teh way with a new design direction by then?

Seem to be a mixed bag of respondents, students and teachers. I am working on a 'dual' book, i'm just working things out like text and images at the moment on paper (no sketchbooks!)and on illustrator; will post visuals soon.

Hey babe
Your work is so interesting. I have just been reading it all and taking it all in as I have had to catch up! A dual book sounds quite a good idea. Will it have the different opinions within it? Thank you also for the comments on my blog, I haven't been expecting any as we are coming to an end however you still had time to have a look and I really appreciate it!

I like the idea of the dual book for what you are doing. It could be like the magazine creative review that has two covers and you turn the magazine round when you finish with one side to see the other. It will show the contrast on opinions very well.
Sorry i didn't commented for this issue but, i told you already, in spain is different...

I'm loving the dual book idea, I love the fact that it's gona' be spiral binded even more! That's such a schooly/government method of binding such publications so its very fitting! everyone loves reading opinions so the book should be a good read - make sure it is not a heavy read though, for passer by to quickly flick through. Maybe you could try and get some famous designers opinions too?

Oh yes!! Ravi is right! I'm getting designer's opinions and it makes the whole thing much more interesting... And it's not very difficult! unless you want a particular one and... nothinK

Hi everyone,

thanks very much for the comments, it's really appreciated! Feel as if i'm getting somewhere now! Got an awful lot to do though. Getting designers opinions is an interesting idea and i had thought about doing it, will have to do it quick though! I'm wondering just how much of peoples opinions to include though, as i don't want the books to be full of just my own thoughts, but the opinions/questions of others too.
